The Vegas Golden Knights

Preseason hockey is underway with the NHL set to begin in less than two weeks. To celebrate, today's Underdog is the Vegas Golden Knights (and a fun read about their newest addition Max Pacioretty). The Las Vegas expansion team first debuted last season, and in the first year, they nearly did the unthinkable -- 51-24-7, a division title and a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals. They lost to the Capitals 4-1, but look to get back and win it all in Year 2. One way to do that? Snag a veteran...

Enter Max Pacioretty, a 10-year vet heading on an adventure. Pacioretty grew up in Connecticut and was drafted 22nd overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2007. He's called Montreal home for the last 10 seasons and spent his whole life in the northeast. Last week, the Golden Knights traded for Pacioretty, adding just their fifth American to the roster. After the trade, we found this awesome story in the Player's Tribune written by Pacioretty. They're not even on the sheets! If you love hockey or have a few minutes, it's worth the read.

To put the Golden Knights' success in perspective, the Houston Texans (est. 2002) took 10 seasons to secure their first playoff trip. The Toronto Raptors (est. 1995) took five years to reach the playoffs and only made it past the first round once in the first 20 years. Vegas has outdone nearly every other expansion team in history. Put ice in the desert and what do you get? An Underdog...
