Andrew Jones Returns to Basketball

It was last January when Texas guard Andrew Jones was diagnosed with Leukemia. He was the Longhorns’ leading scorer (13.5 points per game) when the news shattered much more than his basketball season.

Unsure of his future, the 20-year-old junior went through seven long months of chemotherapy at the Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. In August, he beat it, rejoined his team, and is now playing basketball again.

Texas tipped off the season last night at home against Eastern Illinois, and Jones entered the game with 11:40 in the second half. What ensued was everything that’s beautiful in sports.

A trip to the free-throw line for Jones got the Erwin Center crowd on its feet. He missed the first but sunk the second, and the home crowd erupted.

“Just being back out there, there’s no better feeling,” said Jones.
